My clients are always asking me, what do you see coming, what’s going to be hot? What color…
Starting this new decade, I think, we are going to see a big shift in trends, from wall coloring and finishes, to the smallest accessory pieces. With the major issues facing all of us right now, it will be very interesting to see where this drives us, in terms of design and our homes overall. We are going to be looking at things differently, it will drive changes in our values and needs. This is going to be the decade of Individuality.
Design lists are generally, about a theme, such as nautical, traditional, rustic… The trend this year is that there is no trend, not in this literal sense anyway. So anything goes, making a traditional style home, YOUR traditional home. An eclectic, personalized approach, based on a foundation of popular styles. 1) Wallpaper. Have you noticed how popular wallpaper is becoming? It started showing up in bathrooms, the foyer, and as an accent wall. Now is can be seen everywhere, even on the ceiling. It is in bold, large prints, geometric shapes, abstract, and updated florals. There is some interest starting in metallics too. It is sophisticated and modern.

2) 2 – 3 Color Kitchens. Kitchens continue to be the family meeting place, the focal point of the home. Starting in 2019, we have been seeing white kitchens losing favor. Color is on the upswing in the kitchen, like every other space in the home. This trend will continue its popularity and expand.
The top colors are blues, especially navy and black. The newest color we are starting to utilize is a muted forest green, watch for this color to really trend in 2021. Marble countertops are a big hit currently, with wood and black countertops gaining in popularity.
To update your all-white cabinets, paint the lowers black or navy to take advantage of the high contrast comeback. Tiles, cabinets, and walls are all options to introduce a third color and pattern. Then, balance the space wood tones, especially natural to rustic are a great choices. You can incorporate rattan or bamboo trim or on chairs to take advantage of the eco-friendly approach in decor.

3) Multi-Use Spaces. As the uses for the spaces in our homes evolve and change with different demands in our lives, we are focusing on multi-functional designs. We need a homework area, a home office, a playroom. The dining area may include space for homework or a home office. A guest bedroom may have a home office or place it in a nook in the living area. You may want a larger tub and you can fit that into the master bedroom with a little creativity. A children’s play area can be worked nicely right into their bedroom.
Our open floor plan homes are flexible, can evolve with life-changing needs. Multi-functional spaces are not only acceptable, but they have also become a trend. This has led to people staying in the same home 5 years longer than in 2010.

4) Eco-Friendly. Warm, earthly elements are trending, popping up in every room. You can incorporate rattan, raffia, plants, and woods to achieve this classic, versatile look. Sustainable products are a balance of modern and traditional, they work with coastal and bohemian styles too. They create a relaxing atmosphere for a casual, comfortable space with personality.
You can, also, use natural materials with a luxurious edge, such as marble and linen. And the plants that are eco- friendly natural accents are trending from the fig fiddle leaf to the olive tree. It has a more sophisticated sage tone.

5) Authentic / Quality / Artistic. There is a re-emerging appreciation for quality, authentic products. I have seen a lot of my clients preferring quality over quantity– Less is more attitude. Faux is out, as we shy away from mass-produced, demanding a return to quality, artisan workmanship. We want unique pieces that show off the personality of the owner. Pieces that have a story, the artist’s story, and relate to the personal history of the owner. This is where individuality can shine, making your space uniquely yours.
6) Hot Colors. I’ve mentioned that color os one of the most powerful tools that a designer has. With one sweeping look, it says so much about the style of the space and the personality of you.
One group of trending colors soothe the soul, they are organic, earthy tones that fit in the warm family of colors: coral to terra cotta shades, sophisticated earthy pinks, to soft peachy tones.

7) Vintage, Antique, Artistic. Vintage is returning stronger than ever as people are breaking away from decorating in one particular style. We are seeing an eclectic aesthetic with more mixing and matching. This is a perfect fit for focusing on individualism. Our personal pieces have a history, they are vintage, antique items that mix well in a classical, traditional style. You can, also, incorporate a vintage piece in a minimalist style room. Antique, gilt-framed landscape can mix in a coastal modern or contemporary space. Try incorporating spooled leg artist piece, spindles, antique art, oxidized metals, earthenware pottery all add to your own, unique look. You just need to have a balance, create a piece of interest in the room, keep a flow. You can create an antique item in with new decor.
8) Texture & Pattern. As a designer, I love texture–it adds warmth, interest, depth to a space and it’s more popular than ever. Texture scale is larger than in previous seasons, coordinating exact or similar shades with a variety of scale. Chunky! It is very effective when you are using a lot of neutrals. The most popular ways to incorporate texture is with pillows, throws, rugs, plants, and flowers.
The other huge trend is combining texture with patterns. Pattern is everywhere, florals, geometric, large, and bold. This style is really being fueled with large print wallpaper. Also, bright abstract and large floral wall art can be used to give you a unique focal point.
Layering patterns is a very creative way to bring out your personality and is successfully accomplished by using different styles and varying scale-again is great to do with pillows, throws and rugs. This is great layered with texture. Texture and pattern mixing with color tying them together, then mixing with various scale throughout the room, creates a harmonious space. You want to create a flow from the wall to furniture to textiles. This will take some experimentation to get it to work. It sounds a little complicated! 9) Curves and Organic Shapes. Super clean, straight lines are being replaced with curves and organic shapes. The minimalist style is evolving with a midcentury modern twist, focusing on curves to soften the overall look. Sofas and chairs, emphasizing curves, are showing up in many designer layouts. This look is pretty, feminine, glamorous- a great design element, and totally functional.

10) Bath Updates. Bathrooms have gone bold too. Printed wallpaper and geometric pattern tiles are featured. Colored marble, brass, and woods are used to complete an on-trend look.
Crittal style doors for the shower are one of my favorite looks. It gives the space a clean, modern look but yet fits into an edgy industrial style. Another favorite for homeowners right now is a free standing tub. This promotes an artistic, personal angle.
The top trends for 2020 cover a lot of little details. The abstract pieces that you can use to put together the perfect space for you.
Look at the space you are decorating and determine what your general theme is, traditional, midcentury modern, rustic, and then take the bits and pieces that speak to you from the trends, add your personal favorite items to create that unique style that is only you.
